My son is in Golf Company and although he is not 2/8 but 2/3 I did get to see him briefly when they were honoring their fallen brothers. My prayers are with those who have suffered a loss and with those who continue on with the battle that has taken so many of their brothers. God bless our marines and their families for all that they have given and continue to give. Semper Fi

I am the proud wife of a marine in 2/8 Golf Co. I want to thank CBS for featuring my husband and his marine brothers in the segment. I wanted to know if there was a way I also could obtain the entire interview. Or a burnt CD.. Just email me if this is possible.

Bands of attacks? Obviously the situation is out of control. The enemies have lack of fear. We need to send a message that if they pop up it's a certain death or capture. I think the vastness of the country is not a problem because we can be everywhere but nowhere at the same time. That where the SHU and the FedEx techniques come in to play in combination with the crane, the tiger, the swooping talon techniques. We need to pull out and let each town bestow their own justice. We support them as long as they are in good standing and arrest the enemies. If they can not or turn roque we blanket them and clean up the town. This way they get it that they can not operate in any town. I believe this is the only way.

While the new stategy is probably right for this type of war, the costs are too great.
Afghanistans culture is very closed and barbaric. Only at the African continent can one find countries that are just as backward and under-developped. Just as it would be insane for America to start nation building in Congo or Sierra Leone, its insane to be nation building Afghanistan. Afghanistan is too ethnically divided, too decentralised, too religious, too warriorlike in its culture to have any hope any meaningful transformation. The moral values of the Afghans are by our western standard extremely bad. 12 year old girls girls get forced into marriage, most of the people are corrupt and a lot of them are involved in drugtrade and mafia-like crime.
The mountains that go up and down all the time makes it too hard for an expensive army to fight light-footed cavemen with guns.

Its just about the time for Obama to send the army home. To bind up 40 000 more american troops at a time when Irak is a mess and Iran is flexing their muscles is just not approperiate. The troops in Afghanistan are brave men and heros, but one have to pick ones fights. It would be much better to let the afghans be the master over their own destiny, and not waste an army of 100 000 american soldiers in some remote mountains. A much better approach would be to leave no permanent troops Afghanistan, but to constantly disturb Al Qauida and its allies with drone attacks, short and quick commando raid and cruiser missiles. The point is to keep the forces safe, but occasionally using lightning attacks if its found necessary. For example, it should be relatively easy for america to do lightning strikes with airborne commandosoldiers against Al Qaida targets. Just fly in 1000 troops from a marine ship to an area for a day or two, kill as many taliban and Al Qauida as possible. Then get out of the country. Do this kind of thing many time a year if necessary. In this way the americans will suddenly be the dynamic attacker, not the Taliban. As it it now Taliban can pick time and place for attacking american troops. Lets reverse it. Americans stay out of reach from Talibans foot soldiers, only to attack them suddenly and then disapear as fast as they came.

Boots on the ground, eliminate the fire zones and stop the political indecision. Either lead or follow or get out of the way. War is hell, there will be collateral damage that will happen.
We cannot allow another Viet-Nam, these whom have never served a day in the defense of their country are now in a position of jeopardizing the mission. It should become a legal requirement for anyone wanting to become president that they have to had served in the US military. Washington's bull crap has to stop these our son's and daughter's and you are not going to do what you did to us in Viet-Nam. Enough, is enough!!!These are men whom have been trained for one mission: fight and win, plain and simple. There is no second guessing, when you are willing to let your children go into harms way then you will feel our collective pain as parent's watching our kid's get hurt or killed, while you are out their wondering what television talk show you are scheduled to speak on. Get a clue: term-limits. Semper Fi!!

What a nice memorial right in the middle of it all. To these wonderful young men who gave the ultimate gift for our freedom. I have seen first hand a very close friend go through the loss of a very young brave and remarkable young man in the unit. We pay tribute to Greg for his dedicated commitmnent to keeping all of his American family and freinds safe. From a extremely grateful American. This needs to end soon, it's so heartbreaking to hear of these young folks each and every day. Can't imagine the empty whole these families fill and it will never be mended until they see their loved ones in Heaven.

We should get the Iranian for arming the Taliban. Ultimately the Iranian kills our Marines, let not kidding ourselves, do we have to wait for Adinergard (Iranian Pres) to declares war with the US? Afghan Gov. is also responsible for our Marine Deaths, their corruption should not be tolerate and at the cost of our Marines. Let put some one else in the Afghan Gov that we can trust.

The Afghan people should fighting this war, if they like to share their bed with the Taliban, let them be, if they scared of the Taliban, then we should give them weapon to defend for them selves.

Time to rethink our role and how far we should be involve.

We are not going to be able to win this war for the Afghan people (fighting with one hand behind our back, we have a weakness that we can't speak the language and can't tell one Taliban from Afghan...)if the people don't fight for themselves, we shouldn't have to convince the people to help us; When we do, some thing is wrong! Time to get out.

Sir: They way to defeat the Taliban is destroy the Opium, their "pocketbook". Blast all mountain trade opium routes. Destroy the opium crops.Have our Ag specialists help the farmers to replace with corn, rice or wheat. Place 12 soldiers at each farm house area to keep the Taliban from coming back. 1,000 farms = 12,000 soldiers.

It should be common knowledge that 2/8 Golf Co. Company Commander Capt. Matt Martin has dedicated the past 5 years of his personal life and Military Career to Counter Insurgency and Counter Terrorism and it is no surprise why he was hand selected as the Company Commander for Golf Co.2/8. As a former Marine myself it is my honest opinion that there is no better man for the job to lead these Marines (Matt is a a "Mustang" Officer having advanced through the ranks of the enlisted from PFC to SGT before earning his commission as a Marine Corp Officer). The mission in Afghanistan is difficult beyond belief and unforetunately for our service members, they are appearently stuck in this bureaucratic quagmire because of the indecisiveness of the current Administration. With regards to the hearts and minds agenda, they are literally taking the hands of our warriors and tying them behind their back. I support the Marines, and the United States of America on the war on terror, but the public must demand that the men volunteering to do this work be able to use any means neccesary to protect themselves, their brothers, and the American way of life.... There are necessary evils in a War, and if there is innocent loss of life on the other end to save the life of an American, than that should be deamed the cost rebuilding a nation, a nation that harbors terrorists that killed 3000 American and destroyed the lives tens of thousands more, a country that provides 90% of the world with heroine, who's illegal narcotic proceeds fund radical Islamist organizations and Jihad around the world. Since when is an Afghan Life worth more than that of an Americans? Especially those of our Troops? WAKE UP AMERICA!

"God has a hard on for Marines, because we kill everything we see. He plays His games, we play ours. To show our appreciation for so much power, we keep heaven packed with fresh souls. God was here before the Marine Corps, so you can give your heart to Jesus, but your ass belongs to the corps."

I want to thank 60 minutes for featuring 2/8 Golf Co. More Americans need to be aware of the sacrifices being made for us back home. My son is in Golf Co and he has lost many of his brothers. God Bless them all and for a safe return. It was great seeing my son, even for only a few seconds on TV, thanks again CBS. Semper Fi

It upsets me that it is only U.S. troops out there in the "boonies" to contend with Afghan's so-called enemies - the Taliban.Whay are there no Afghani troops with them to assist, if for nothing else, to help build confidence among the locals. I don't think our commanders nor our political leadership are conducting this confict at all appropriately. For example, just the other day 8 or 9 of our guys were killed in the village of Hamedesh, located in a valley. You don't control a valley from the bottom of it, but at the top of it. That's how we got our butts kicked in the Kasserine Pass in north Africa. I know Patton and Bradley are turning over in their graves over this type of tactic. We need to alter our tactics or get out of there. Enough of our young men have become casualties for that worthless real estate.

I am so proud of our men and women in the armed forces. It is very hard for people in our country to understand what happens around the globe affects us at home. So many have given so much to enable us to live free. It is sad some people dont think about or pray for our troops for all they do. I would like to personally say thank you for the protection these brave people have given for me, my wife and 8 month old. You guys are the real heroes! You keep our country safe and you are the future of our country! Thank you all so much and God Speed!
